The Spanish Department at Pathfinder now offers levels 1, 2, 3 and an accelerated Spanish 1 class that covers Spanish 1 and 2 topics. The purpose of these courses is to expose students to the Spanish language and culture both locally as well as globally.

In order to better attain these goals, students will study useful, conversational vocabulary, as well as participate in cultural activities pertaining to the groups of Spanish-speaking people we will be studying during the course.

Topics will range from the study of South America, Central America and Mexico to recent immigrant groups now living in the U.S. from the Caribbean such as the Cubans, Dominicans, and Puerto Ricans.

Spanish 1

Spanish 1 is an elective class open to all students. In the beginning level of Spanish, students are introduced to the language, culture, and an array of useful vocabulary to promote basic communication.

  • Expression of Courtesy
  • Discussing Well-Being
  • Family/Subject Pronouns
  • Characteristics/Adjectives/Colors

  • Classroom Commands & Objects
  • Food/Music/Various Cultures
Activities in the various levels of Spanish include:

Spanish 2

Spanish 2 is a continuation of Spanish 1. There is great emphasis on review with introduction of finer writing construction and communication of the language.

Course topics include:
  • Discussing Well Being & Origin
  • Describing Self & Others
  • Expressing Likes & Dislikes
  • Discussing Hobbies, School, and Professions
  • Conjugation of Ar, Er and Ir Verbs
  • Conjugation of Irregular Verbs
  • Interrogative Words
  • Creation of Questions & Responses
  • Reading & Writing in Spanish
  • Geography/Culture & Food

Spanish 3

Spanish 3 is the next highest level of language study. It is offered to students with two years of experience with the Spanish language. The course expands the student's knowledge and perspective of the culture. The focus is building skills necessary to communicate Spanish with confidence and effectiveness.

  • Review of Regular Verb Conjugation of Ar, Er & Ir verbs
  • Review of Irregular Verb Conjugation Especially Ser/Estar, Tener/Venir & Ir Verbs
  • Stem-Changing Verb Conjugation
  • Reflexive Verbs
  • Preterite Tense Verbs
  • Irregular Preterite Tense Verbs
  • Story Narration Using Preterite Tense
  • Future Tense Verbs
  • Travel Vocabulary
  • Geography, Culture and Art & Food
