The Title One Language Arts program accentuates specific needs of the individual student by building upon effective strategies for learning essential and critical reading and communication skills. It allows the student to expand upon critical ideas, retain and recall increasingly complex information, identify themes of literature through a variety of reading materials. Students work individually and in small cooperatively-engaged groups to develop and apply their English language arts skills. The underlying objective is to help students realize effective reading strategies, apply abstract thinking, develop reflective thinking and utilized effective support options in the classroom.

Our emphasis is on interactive cooperative learning. With a wide variety of reading selections our classroom provides literacy structure for our challenged readers. Hence, students learn to apply cognitive reasoning to various levels of problem solving by being exposed to a variety of literature genre. Specialized assistance with mindfulness to individual learning accommodations is implemented. The literature incorporated within various grade levels introduces the student to high interest level reading materials. It is designed to challenge and encourages the reader to reach out to a higher expectation level.

The students are introduced to classic and contemporary works, with the emphasis on analyzing the author’s structure of works of literature. In addition, students are exposed to elements of fiction and non-fiction, using comparing and contrasting, concepts of abstract thinking and symbolic interpretation. The students are encouraged to write for creativity in order to use their imagination in developing themes, situations and characters. Weekly, students are exposed to current event issues and are expected to attempt a written response of their comprehension. In addition, on-going exercises in proper use of grammar and paragraph formation, as well as development of self-editing and self-assessment is applied. The curriculum is designed to implement English Frameworks in a method revised for addressing individual accommodations and maximum benefit for the diverse learner.

As a Title One language arts teacher, I help to identify the individual’s strengths and reinforce weaknesses by encouraging the student to identify their own skills and work toward enrichment. Individual learning styles and accommodations are paramount in the structure of the Title One supportive classroom. Students are encouraged to recognize their own areas of strengths and weakness, and reach out cooperatively for peer and teacher assistance. We desire students to build effective strategies for problem solving, communication, reading comprehension, and most importantly, self maturation for life long learning.

Reading Objectives: An effective language arts program teaches students to respond to a wide variety of literature genres and communicate their point of view. Approaches to interpretation of literature with the development of language arts strategies are emphasized in all Title One language arts classes. It is the goal for students to read increasingly complex materials and apply language arts strategies and to be able to:

  • Attempt to decode word meaning through various literature genres
  • Understand and apply new vocabulary
  • Identify basic facts
  • Understand how words are read, heard and viewed
  • Interpret meaning of literary works, including: nonfiction, fiction, media, contemporary and classic works of art
  • Formulate questions and apply inquiry
  • Retain increasingly complex information
  • Accurately use recall for literacy elements
  • Join in informal discussion groups
  • Listen respectfully to others’ opinion
  • Write thoughts clearly and concisely
  • Identify and apply correct structure of English
  • Improve upon organizational skills
